The Wright Brothers-On December 17, 1903 in the Outer Banks North Carolina the Wright brothers launched the first machine powered plane to get in to the air for a substantial time. Called the Wright glider it traveled over the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk for several hundred feet at about 40 to 50 mph. Word of the “first flight” soon spread throughout the nation and the world. Naturally, the military became immediately interested in the ability of flight and gave the Wright brothers a contract. This marked the beginning of not only flight but a new era in travel and military technology.
